Literacy & Language Development

Literacy and Language Development at Luke Initiative for Scripture Translation (LIST)

The Luke Initiative for Scripture Translation (LIST) exists to serve people by honoring their languages, strengthening literacy, and making Scripture accessible in ways that speak directly to the heart. We believe language is more than words it carries identity, culture, faith, and history. When people can read and hear God’s Word in their own language, transformation begins not only spiritually, but also socially and intellectually. Our work integrates Scripture translation, literacy, and language development, ensuring that communities are empowered to read, understand, and use translated materials for generations to come.

What We Do

At the heart of LIST’s work is a deep commitment to people and their languages. Many communities still lack written forms of their languages or have limited reading materials, creating barriers to education, communication, and spiritual growth. We work alongside local communities to:
  • Develop written forms of previously unwritten or underdeveloped languages
  • Translate Scripture accurately and faithfully into local languages
  • Promote literacy so people can read and understand translated materials
  • Train local speakers as translators, literacy facilitators, and language advocates
By combining Bible translation with literacy development, we ensure that Scripture does not remain a book that exists only on paper but becomes a living message that can be read, shared, and passed on.

Our Work

Our work begins by listening. We take time to understand each community—their language, culture, and unique needs. Language development is a collaborative process, and local participation is essential at every stage.

Language Development

We support communities in analyzing their language, developing writing systems, and creating foundational reading materials. This includes:
  • Orthography development (creating or refining alphabets and spelling systems)
  • Producing primers, storybooks, and educational materials
  • Preserving oral traditions and cultural expressions

Scripture Translation

Using well-established translation principles, we translate Scripture accurately, clearly, and culturally meaningful. Local translators work alongside trained linguists and biblical scholars to ensure faithfulness to the original texts while maintaining natural expression in the target language.

Literacy Programs

Translation alone is not enough if people cannot read. Our literacy programs:
  • Teach adults and children to read and write in their own language
  • Use Scripture portions and local stories as learning tools
  • Build confidence and encourage lifelong learning
This integrated approach enables communities to grow both spiritually and intellectually.

Our Projects

Each LIST project is community-centered and sustainable. We do not simply deliver finished translations—we build capacity within the community. A typical project includes:
  1. Community Engagement – Building trust, identifying language needs, and forming local translation teams
  2. Training – Equipping local speakers with skills in translation, literacy instruction, and language documentation
  3. Translation and Testing – Translating Scripture and testing it with community members for clarity and accuracy
  4. Publication and Distribution – Producing print and audio materials that are accessible to all
  5. Ongoing Literacy Support – Continuing education to ensure long-term use and understanding
Through this process, communities take ownership of their language and Scripture, ensuring lasting impact beyond the life of the project.

Making an Impact

The impact of literacy and Scripture translation reaches far beyond the written word:
  • Spiritual Growth: People encounter God in a language they fully understand
  • Education: Literacy opens doors to learning, confidence, and opportunity
  • Cultural Preservation: Languages and traditions are documented and valued
  • Community Empowerment: Local leaders gain skills that strengthen their communities
We have seen individuals learn to read for the first time using Scripture in their own language. Families gather to listen to audio Scriptures. Communities gain renewed pride in their identity. These changes ripple outward, shaping future generations.

Support Us

None of this work is possible without partnership. Supporting LIST means investing in people, languages, and lasting transformation. You can support us by:
  • Praying for our translators, literacy workers, and partner communities
  • Giving financially to support translation, training, and literacy materials
  • Partnering with us as an organization, church, or individual
  • Sharing our mission with others who believe in the power of language and Scripture
Together, we can ensure that every language is valued, every voice is heard, and every community has access to God’s Word in the language of their heart.
